Choosing an Area Rug
Area rugs are a great way to add warmth and comfort to a room. Before getting that rug you’ll have to measure the space on the area. The rule of thumb in the world of interior design is that the front legs of any furniture pieces should be on top of the rug, but, hey, rules are sometimes meant to be broken!
In the living room measure the size of the seating area adding six inches to the end of both sides. If the area is long take that into consideration when selecting an area rug so that the room is orientated. Be consistent, keep all the legs of furniture on, keep only the front legs of the furniture on, or leave them all off. If the furniture is not consistent the conversation area will look uneven and messy. Note that end tables are excluded from the consistent rule.
When choosing an area rug keep in mind the traffic through the room, pets, and children. These can make a difference when choosing the texture and color of the rug.
Most people use throw rugs to decorate a bedroom, but an area rug can also be used in such rooms. There are a few things to keep in mind when using an area rug in a bedroom. Unlike the living room there is no designated seating area in most bedrooms. Some people like to place the bed on top of an area rug, when doing this measure the bed and add one foot to each side. This will allow you to step out of bed and onto the rug.
Another option is to incorporate the area at the end of the bed. For this option decide how far under the bed you want the area rug to go and how much will be left out at the foot and sides of the bed. If placing another piece of furniture on the rug such as a nearby chair or a small table, make sure the rug is large enough for at least the front legs to rest on it.
While most people do not incorporate an area rug in the kitchen or dining room, this can be a very good decoration idea. If an area rug is being used in the kitchen or dining room it is usually placed under a table. Measure the table adding one and a half feet so that chairs move with ease and no one trips on the rug. Having an area rug in one of these rooms means a greater chance of spills. This should be taken into consideration when purchasing an area rug for this space.
