Tips for Decorating a Formal Living Room
The First Step
Decorating any formal living room requires something that will inspire you. It could be an area rug you fell in love with, a piece of art, or even a swatch of material. Use this to choose the colors for the room. Do not be afraid to use more than one color from your inspirational piece.
When decorating a formal living room the function of the room needs to be considered. If you do a lot of entertaining it is essential to create an environment where your guests will feel comfortable.
Normal Size Room
Furniture should be placed in a way that all guests can see each other. For this purpose consider an oval shaped arrangement using sofas, chairs, coffee tables, and end tables. Avoid placing large items on the tables which may obstruct the view.
Incorporating a book case may or may not work depending on the size of the furniture and the room. There is a large selection of wall options to replace book cases. Table lamps or floor lamps work great in any normal size room as long as big pieces are not integrated. Using mirrors can make the room appear larger and a variety of accent pieces can pull a room together. Don’t forget to make sure the pieces you chose are not too big for the room.
Large Room
If you have a large formal living room designate various spaces throughout the room. Arrange furniture into conversation areas having one main conversation area. Use sofas and chairs to construct the main conversation area and incorporate end tables and possibly a coffee table. Using two comfortable chairs and a table will construct an intimate space for two people. This allows two individuals to escape the main conversation area if they wish. If your space is larger, then a game table with four chairs can be set up for a game of cards, or chess.
Most large rooms also incorporate a chandelier or ceiling fan for lighting. In large rooms there may be multiple forms of lighting within the ceiling. Consider adding various table lamps in the sitting areas or floor lamps. A nice book shelf works well in large rooms and creates a cozy space. Large pieces of art or colleges also work well in large rooms along with bigger accent pieces.
Small Room
You might have the opposite problem and have a small formal living room. When choosing your furniture look for sofas and chairs with tight, small arms. Choose a round coffee table which takes up less room. For additional seating consider ottomans which can be pushed up against a wall or placed between two chairs when not in use. Nesting tables or folding tables will make a great temporary table and it can be easily stored when not in use.
In smaller rooms floor lamps are the best option because they can be placed in corners or behind chairs and they won’t use a lot of space. Mirrors can make the room appear bigger, wall shelving adds space for books and other accents and they won’t use any floor space. Collages of smaller pieces of art add flair to a room without making it appear smaller.
When decorating your formal living room these are some tips to keep in mind. They will aid in creating a space that is warm and inviting.
